“1984” is a dystopian novel written by George Orwell and published in 1949. The story takes place in a fictional world where a totalitarian regime controls every aspect of citizens’ lives. The story is narrated by the main character, Winston Smith, who works as a bureaucrat in the Ministry of Truth.

The society in which Winston lives is controlled by the Party, led by Big Brother, a charismatic leader who never appears in public. The Party has total control over everything, including history, language and the thoughts of citizens. Society is divided into three classes: members of the Inner Party, members of the Outer Party, and the proles, who are the non-Party workers.

Winston lives in a small, uncomfortable apartment and is constantly monitored by the Thought Police, responsible for finding and arresting those who may pose a threat to the regime. Winston is unhappy with the life he leads and misses freedom and privacy. He begins to write in a secret diary, where he expresses his deepest feelings and thoughts.

Winston begins to get involved in a romance with a co-worker, Julia, and together they begin to rebel against the regime. They secretly meet in a hidden place and discuss their plans to free themselves from the Party’s control. They join a mysterious man named O’Brien, who promises them help to overthrow the regime.

However, they are betrayed by O’Brien, who is actually an agent of the Thought Police. Winston and Julia are arrested and taken to the Thought Police prison, where they are subjected to physical and psychological torture in Room 101. Winston is forced to accept the Party’s doctrine and betray Julia.

The novel ends with Winston completely subjugated to the Party, with no chance of rebellion. The book is a critique of totalitarianism and a warning about the dangers of manipulating truth and language.
